Turnitin is Upgrading to v1.3!

Hello to all of our wonderful TurnItIn users! We are upgrading the Turnitin External Tool in Canvas from version 1.1 to 1.3 on August 22nd (the day after grades are due). This update improves how Turnitin connects with Canvas, making it more secure, more stable, and better supported by the vendor moving forward.

How Does this Impact Faculty?

If you are currently using the Turnitin External Tool (selected from the “External Tool” option in Canvas assignments), this upgrade applies to your course.

Assignments created with the old Turnitin 1.1 tool will still be accessible, but starting in the Fall term of 2025, the LTI 1.3 version will be the default option when using Turnitin as an external tool.

What’s New in LTI 1.3

Turnitin’s LTI 1.3 integration includes several improvements over the older 1.1 version:

  • Filtering Turnitin assignments by section for your stacked courses (Big update!)

  • Improved stability and authentication through modern security protocols

  • Streamlined assignment setup with a simplified workflow

  • Support for Canvas SpeedGrader launch from Turnitin assignments

  • Easier submission management, including clearer resubmission controls

With all of these improvements, it will be easier to manage submissions, our grade flow will be simplified, and our security standards with Canvas and Turnitin will be heightened.

What About Plagiarism Framework Users?

This upgrade does not affect assignments that use the Canvas Plagiarism Framework. If you are using Turnitin through the Plagiarism Review dropdown in Canvas Assignments, you are already using a different integration method and do not need to make changes due to this upgrade.

Important for Canvas Rubrics Users

Canvas rubrics do not sync to the new LTI 1.3 version of Turnitin assignments. If you are currently using Canvas rubrics with Turnitin External Tool assignments, we strongly recommend either:

If you want to switch to the Framework, below are the steps to transition. Just remember to only change assignments before students submit. Converting after submissions can cause lost work, grading, and feedback. Also, If instructions were typed into the Turnitin instructions box (not Canvas’), copy them first so they aren’t lost.

  1. Open the assignment in Canvas.

  2. Click Turnitin Edit Settings and copy any instructions.

  3. Since there’s no Edit button, add /edit to the end of the assignment URL and press Enter to open edit mode.

  4. Paste instructions into the Canvas assignment instructions box.

  5. Change Submission Type from External Tool to Online.

  6. Select File Uploads, Text Entry, or both.

  7. In the Plagiarism Review area, choose Turnitin.

  8. Adjust Turnitin settings as needed.

  9. Adjust other Canvas settings.

  10. Click Save.

If you’re a visual learner, we also have a video made from the TurnItIn team to guide you through this process using the steps above.
